Winter Blast: A Weekend of Indigenous Games - Smithsonian - National Museum of the American Indian
This family-friendly event celebrates Indigenous games from the Arctic to Argentina. Learn to play Native games from across the hemisphere in celebration of winter.
Learn to play traditional Hawaiian games with Leihua Stewart (Native Hawaiian), including pala'ie, a ball and hoop game; kōnane, Hawaiian "checkers"; and hū a spinning game with kukui nut tops. Julia Garcia (Aymara) and her family will be sharing Bolivian games, such as El sapo (the frog), juego de Chuwies-frijoles (a game that uses colored beans), and Pasara tawa sara el Ultimo se quedara (the train). Participants can also play Mahkisina Meehkintiinki (Moccasin Game) played by the Myaamia with Renée Gokey (Eastern Shawnee, Sac and Fox with Miami descendancy), as well as learn a song, and see examples of Myaamia ribbon work used to make the game pieces. Museum staff will also engage visitors in various string games from across the Western Hemisphere.
