Stargazing

Take a look through our telescopes while you’re out exploring Washington, DC. Join Museum staff on the sidewalk near American University's Duber Hall, at 3399 New Mexico Ave NW. 

Experienced staff will help you to observe a variety of things, including planets, stars, and the Moon. All telescopes will be provided by the Smithsonian.

Accessibility: there is step-free access to the programming area along the public sidewalk. Written and touchable explanatory materials are available for learners of all types.

• Stargazing is free and open to the public, no tickets or reservations required.
• The event is weather permitting and may be cancelled due to rain, clouds, and other poor visibility. For last-minute updates, call the Astronomy Education number at 202-633-2517.
• The planned rain date for this program is Tuesday, July 21 from 7:30-9:00pm.
• Stargazing activities will take place on the sidewalk outside Duber Hall at American University, at 3399 New Mexico Ave NW in Washington, DC. 
• Parking is available along New Mexico Ave NW; check the official signs for information about permitted parking times and payment options.
• Public transit options include the D20 Metrobus route (the New Mexico Av NW and Nebraska Av NW stop is right by the programming area). The nearest Metrorail station is Tenleytown-AU on the red line, an approximately one mile (30-minute) walk to the programming area. 
• We recommend bringing layers of clothing and wearing comfortable shoes.
