Camp Kesem William & Mary was founded in 2013 and supports children in the greater Hampton Roads area by providing one week-long summer camp experience and year-long peer support. CKW&M is operated by more than 70 student volunteers and serves more than 120 campers ages 6-18 and their families.
Campers during participate in the usual camp activities including canoeing, archery, arts and crafts, games and singing good old-fashioned camp songs. However, the support of the counselors and newfound friends are what the student directors believe make Camp Kesem special because they can relate to one another in a different way than their classmates. The counselors and staff undergo intensive training that focuses on facilitating positive group interactions and creating a memorable experience for campers. We create a safe, supportive, and fun environment, in which campers support each other and emerge from the week with increased self-esteem and with the understanding that they are not alone.
